Let’s Be Cheesy: National Grilled Cheese Day

You know it, you love it, and you most likely have a hard time living without it. That’s right — we’re talking about cheese. Gooey and delicious, melted or in string form (and everything in between), we can find numerous ways to enjoy our favorite ingredient.

Including on the grill.

Today is National Grilled Cheese Day and we’re celebrating by firing up the grill for this quick, easy, and delicious snack. It’s a classic fan favorite, plus making your sandwich on the grill gives it a toasty and smoky flavor you simply won’t get in a pan or oven. The first, and arguably most important step is deciding on your cheese. It’s vital that you choose a cheese (or variety of cheeses!) that melts easily, but has a good texture. We love aged cheddar, fontina, brie, or jack for a sharper flavor. Next, decide on your bread of choice. A thicker sliced bread is best, like sourdough or even ciabatta.

Preheat your BBQ Island Gas Grill on medium heat, and butter your bread slices lightly on the outside. This gives the bread a good texture and avoids burnt edges. When your grill is ready to go, transfer your bread over, followed by your choice of cheese. Put the cover down and cook for 2-3 minutes. Flip your sandwich and let sit for another minute. Once the cheese is gooey, just about to melt over the sides, and the bread is beautifully toasted, it’s ready to be served.

If you want to take things to the next level, prep pulled pork, crispy bacons bites, or roast beef to add to your sandwich. When adding meat to your grilled cheese, we recommended placing half of the cheese on your slice, then adding your meat of choice, and finally topping it off with the rest of the cheese to ensure an evenly melted and mouthwatering meal. If meat isn’t your thing, add in tomatoes and jalapeños for a fresh and tasty alternative to a classic grilled cheese sandwich!

If you want to ditch the bread completely, we’ve got some awesome tips for grilling cheese directly on the grill! This goes great with crackers or over grilled slices of baguettes for a great appetizer or party snack.

Give it a try this National Grilled Cheese Day — you might think it’s pretty grate.
